In service, together: June 16 Update

We as an organization will continue to empower and support the next generation of New Orleans youth through initiatives that focus on racial equity, diversity & inclusion, and choose to partner with people within the New Orleans community who live and support our values.

For Guest Chef Night this month we are excited to work with Chef Alfred Singleton of Café Sbisa to create and virtually walk viewers through preparing a delicious entree using produce from local farmers. Our partners at Turning Tables, will demo a live cocktail creation specially paired with Chef Alfred’s meal, and T-Ray the Violinist will be our special musical guest!

So, how does this “virtual” thing work?

When you purchase a ticket to dinner, you’ll receive a box of ingredients (enough for two people) delivered to your door the day of the event. In it, you’ll find everything you need to prepare the dinner with Chef Alfred and the cocktail with Toure!

We’ll send you the menu, an ingredient prep list and the Zoom link ahead of time and at 5pm, you’ll log on and watch as Chef walks you through preparing the dinner. Gioia Barconey of Liberty’s Kitchen will be fielding questions that come up in the Zoom chat.

GiveNOLA Day was a huge success for Liberty’s Kitchen and the young people in our network. This community united – yes, YOU helped to make this happen – and raised over $30,000 for the young people in New Orleans who find us along their paths. Your gifts will continue to support these youth as we move to a virtual model of training in the coming weeks.

Thank you for showing up in a big way for these young adults!

Thanks to YOUR donations, over 130 young people received fresh fruits and vegetables and proteins in the last 10 weeks.

Using our kitchen to stage, package and deliver produce boxes, Top Box Foods, Recirculating Farms Coalition and SPROUT NOLA, together with the Crescent City Farmers Market have teamed up to deliver farmers market produce directly to people’s homes. Top Box Foods delivered to over 12,000 families since mid-March, generating over $68,000 in revenue for local farmers in response to stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19.

Our team is delivering food to up to 20 young people per week. If you feel moved to donate, please click the button below. $25 will send a grocery box to a young person in our network. Please note “trainee groceries” in the comments section when making your donation.

Meet Bernadette Lucas, Chief Finance Officer

Bernadette has a vitally important role at Liberty’s Kitchen but it’s one that not many people see everyday. As Chief Finance Officer, Bernadette ensures that we are compliant with finance and accounting standards. Bernadette meets with each cohort of trainees and teaches a session on taxes and finances.

A New Orleans native, Bernadette has worked in finance for over 20 years and has been at Liberty’s Kitchen since early 2018. Prior to her time at Liberty’s Kitchen, she served as board chair for Common Ground Health Clinic for four years.

Bernadette believes “the Youth Development Program has the ability to change the trajectory of a young person’s life” and chooses to work here because of that.

Thank you, Bernadette, for all you do for Liberty’s Kitchen!
