Mixing Up Some Magic—On the Road
May was a terrific month for Liberty’s Kitchen students. As a part of our Mixing Up Some Magic– On the Road cultivation series, Liberty’s Kitchen hosted an informational event in the Food Network’s demonstration kitchen in NYC. More than 60 people attended the evening that featured New Orleans style food and drink. Students prepared a menu that included Shrimp and Grits, Cochon de Lait, Duck and Andouille Gumbo, and Liberty’s Kitchen signature Cowboy Caviar. Of course, no meal would be complete without a taste of Bananas Foster Bread Pudding!! Libations were generously donated by Crescent Crown.
Most important was the opportunity for our students to visit NYC, to experience a culture different from New Orleans, and to tell their story to some new friends. From getting on a plane for the first time, to a visit through Times Square and a host of other activities, our young students were fascinated by the pace and the glamour of New York. The tremendous accolades they received from the guests made for a positive and rewarding experience that they will never forget. One of our students, while eating a cannoli from New York’s famous Carmines Restaurant (thanks Board Chair Matt Schwartz who sponsored the dinner) said, “this is a spiritual moment for me.”
Liberty’s Kitchen thanks its many supporters that helped to fund the costs of travel and making the excursion a reality for our students. In particular we thank Goldman Sachs, Crescent Crown and the Food Network for providing an unforgettable adventure for our students.
